Why do students take out enormous loans to go to a lower ranking private college over a state university?

Saturday, August 6th, 2011

I know several people who are currently in debt over 50k+. Many of them I know are majoring in unmarketable majors like philosophy.

Do students make this decision out of ignorance of finance? or do they know what they are getting themselves into?

I mean most college graduates with marketable majors still start at 40k a year. If you are 50k in debt making 40k a year you will be living pretty slim!

What college major would be best for me?

Monday, July 4th, 2011

Hi all, I am a senior in high school and next year I will be attending Ohio State University. I am uncertain of what major would fit me the best. Since I do not fully know about each one, I figured I could possibly get some help on here on which might suit me better. I will at least go to college for 4 years, possibly 6. What I want more than anything is a job paying over 100k a year in Manhattan where I work in a building-office type setting wearing a suit everyday. My main interests are computers and business. I find myself to be very good and fast with numbers, but when it comes to really in-depth math and science, I am not so good. I have been recently working on my communication skills and plan to improve them through college. Two majors I have been looking into are finance and computer science. Like I said before, I do not know everything about either so I would like to hear what you think would be the best for me.

How many college graduates currently work in the field that they majored in?

Friday, April 22nd, 2011

The reason I ask is because something like 90% of college graduates eventually end up working in a career completely unrelated to what they majored in.

Why do people end up doing that? You would think that picking your major involves picking something that you’d love to do later on, and/or at least something that would be dependable. My majors were in Finance and Management (currently wrapping it up) and my career is currently in banking, and I’m very happy with both, so I’m kind of bucking the trend here.

Is there anyone else who is in the same situation, or anyone here who is working in a field completely different from what their majors were. Thanks everybody.
Sorry, I forgot to mention that the 90% figure came from some scholastic documentation I had read years ago when I was just starting college. I can’t recall the name of it, but the article further mentioned that the 90% figure is over the course of 10 years from whence the college student graduated.

Saturday, April 16th, 2011

So, I’m getting a CIS degree with a double major in Finance at Georgia State University. Problem is, once I’m done I have no idea what would combine both of my majors in an enjoyable career. Any pointers? Please don’t give me vague information.

Is Graduating College Over Rated now days?

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

I am myself graduating college in a year for a finance major. Many of my friends graduated with Majors such as Business Management, Accounting ( even got there CPA) , Marketing Etc.. And many of them work in Fields they didn’t even graduate in, While others are working with a horrible starting salary of 35K a year. My question is graduating college over rated? Unless you are going for a medical Field or law school i think almost everything else is over rated.

Major College Question regarding getting an MBA in Finance?

Thursday, December 23rd, 2010

I am currently a high school student and I am trying to figure out what to do while in college. My goal is to get an MBA in finance from, preferable, a Ivy League or well known school. I was wondering if I should take business and financial classes as an undergrad or be a history major with a minor in English. I have heard that schools prefer the students with other majors then business when applying for an MBA in finance. If anyone can confirm this or give advice on the path or other paths I can take, I would be very thankful.

Is an Economic Degree sufficient for Accounting after college?

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

I would like to work finance/accounting after college. But my University only offers degrees in Management Science and Economics. I’m leaning towards doing Economics. I was wondering if it was possible to get a job working either finance or accounting with an Econ degree?

Also.. a lot of jobs prefer majors that involve business, financing, or accounting.

Would a degree in Economics fall under those categories?

ANY help would be MUCH appreciated… Thanks!
